The Kurunegala Magistrates' court today commuted sentence on a suspect

with 40 years of rigorous imprisonment based on charges of molesting a 13 year old girl on two accounts during the year 2003.

The convicted is a resident of the Weeram-buwa area in Kuliyapitiya.

An indictment against the accused was filed by the attorney general who cited that the accused had molested the victim on two accounts during the year 2003.

Accordingly, a 20 year sentence was commuted on each charge while a court order was issued to pay two hundred thousand rupees in cash to the victim as compensation.

Meanwhile, three suspects including a UPFA councillor of the Tangalle Municipal Council who have been charged with molesting a 13 year old girl at a tourist hotel in the same area handed themselves over to Police today.

According to Police the suspects are being interrogated at present.

The suspects had handed themselves over to police through an attorney.

Police sources state that 17 more individuals have been placed under custody in connection to the incident.

The suspects are due to be produced before courts tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a protest was launched before the Tangalle bus halt this afternoon expressing dissent against the incident.

The protest was organized by the 'Swabhimani' Women's Consortium.

Women engaged in the protest demanded for the maximum sentence commutable on the accused.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha who was placed under police custody for allegedly molesting a 14 year old girl was produced before the Matara Magistrates Court today.

Matara District Additional Magistrate Dulaani Amarasinghe who presided over the case ordered that the suspects be placed under further custody until the 16th of July.

Charges have been levelled against the Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha for having allegedly molesting the under age victim at a guest house owned by him last month.
