The court of appeal issued a stay order to the Jaffna Magistrate preventing any action being taken against the editor of the Udayan news paper for contempt of court.

In addition the Court of Appeal also issued an order stating that any protest against the writ appeal requested by the editor of the Udayan Newspaper Devaraja Premanath to be forwarded to the court before the 20th of July.

The writ appeal was requested by Devaraja Premanath following an incident where the Jaffna Magistrate Manikkawasagar Ganesharaja called the the editor of the Udayan newspaper to courts and criticized him.

The Udayan newspaper carried an article in which the Jaffna Magistrate had criticized a statement made by MP M. A. Sumandiran.

As this was a violation of parliamentary privileges the magistrate had apologized to the MP and following the apology the magistrate had filed a case against the editor of the Udayan newspaper for contempt of court.
