The United National Party and combined opposition held their district conference in Beruwela yesterday.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe speaking on the occasion noted that the children of this country have lost the right to free education.

Leader of the New Leftist Front Dr.Wickremabahu Karunarathne who was also present stated that Sri Lanka is now a colony of India and the US.

Meanwhile, an UNP urban councillor had interrupted proceedings while Dr.Wickremabahu Karunarathne was addressing the gathering.

Reports indicate that UNP Beruwela urban councillor M M M Arafat had attempted to ask several questions from the speaker.

The councillor alleges that he had then been forcibly removed from the meeting and was assaulted outside the premises.

When we spoke to a senior spokesperson for the UNP, he confirmed that the councillor was removed since he was disrupting proceedings.

The spokesperson added that if the councillor was indeed assaulted, the opposition leader security personnel or any UNP member was not involved.
