Several new laws are being introduced by the Elections Commissioner in lieu of the upcoming local government elections when establishing party offices.
Accordingly the elections commissioner has notified all political party secretariats that in the event of establishing a party office, a letter of consent should be obtained from the legitimate proprietor of the premise.
This notification had been issued to all political party secretaries during a meeting which had been convened at the elections secretariat last Friday under the aegis of the elections commissioner.
This new measure has been introduced by the elections commissioner in order to prevent government buildings from being utilized as party offices.
It is reported that government buildings had been utilised in this regard during previous elections which amounts to a clear violation of election laws.
Party offices will only be permitted to be established within the homes of candidates, with any given party being entitled to establish one media hub and party office.
