A group of farmers are currently engaged in a protest blocking traffic along the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa road.

The protest is currently being staged near the Parakrama Samudraya.

Farmers engaged in the protest allege that they have been deprived of water supply from the Parakrama Samudraya for over a week, which has severely jeopardised their cultivations.

Areas such as Palugasdamana, Sungawila & Onagama have been affected due to the shortages in water supply.

The Polonnaruwa District Director of Irrigation W T Karunarathne noted that the water supply released towards the Eastern part of the Parakrama Samudraya had fallen short of the required water demands.

However he noted that steps had been taken to distribute adequate supplies at present.
