An islandwide dearth of 24,000 nurses

General Secretary of the All Ceylon Health Services Union Gamini Kumarasinghe addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today stated that there is shortage of around 24,000 nurses in the government hospital sector at present.

According to Kumarasinghe the next intake of trained nurses is due within two years.

Moreover, the General Secretary of the All Ceylon Health Services Union noted that a proficiency examination for nursing staff had been slated for the 29th of July with regards to 2nd Grade promotions.

He noted that the nursing staff had not been informed concerning the proficiency exam, which according to the ACHSU is an attempt to make staff
