The Elections Commissioner has requested provincial council chairmen contesting the upcoming polls in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa & Eastern provincial councils to obtain leave during the election period.
According to the election ordinance it is not obligatory that these officials obtain leave.
However according to complaints received, it has been reported that government property has been utilised to carry out election propaganda activity.
Under the provisions of the elections ordinance it is unattainable to carry out investigations on these allegations and enforce the law on those found guilty.
As a pre-emptive measure, the elections commissioner has requested all provincial council’s chairmen & members contesting the upcoming polls to obtain leave.
Several provincial council chairmen are in contention for the upcoming provincial polls which is slated to be held on the 08th of September.
Meanwhile a meeting was convened between the elections commissioner & all political party secretaries at the elections secretariat yesterday.
During the meeting several party representatives had stressed on the situations prevalent in the Batticaloa & Anuradhapura districts.
Here the elections commissioner had requested of these party representatives to obtain situation reports concerning the situation at hand in these districts.
The elections commissioner had stated that it would be decided subsequently whether the assistance of international observers would be obtained in this regard or alternate measures would be resorted to.
The next meeting between all political party representatives & the elections commissioner has been scheduled for the 03rd of August.
