Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has requested the government to pay the 100,000 rupee per family compensation promised to farmers before the 30th of August.
The opposition leader made this request at the UNP district executive meeting held in Anuradhapura today.
He also noted that the UNP is not against this compensation being paid during the election season and that written permission could be obtained from the elections commissioner as well.
Speaking at the meeting UNP Deputy Leader MP Sajith Premadasa stated that people who change parties for their own gain will not be tolerated.
He added that despite personal differences all those in the party should work together towards a common goal.
Meanwhile, political sources indicate that UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara may join the government at the start of next week.
Sources also indicate that discussion held between MP Jayasekara and UNP seniors failed prompting his decision to cross over.
It was also reported that an invitation made by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara to fellow UNP MP Ashoka Abeysinghe to join the government was turned down.
MP Abeysinghe is said to have declared that he will not leave the UNP under any circumstances.
