Sri Lankan Badminton player Niluka Karunaratna lost to Indian player Kashyap Paruppali by 2 sets to 1 in the round of 16 at the London Olympics today.
Playing for a berth in the quarter final round, Niluka fought back strongly to win the 2nd set 21 to 15 points after losing the 1st set 21 to 14 points.
However Niluka failed to hold back the charge of the Indian player Kashyap in the 3rd set with the Indian racing to an unassailable lead in the 3rd set to win the set 21 to 9.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan shuttler has qualified for the round of 16 in the Olympic Games.
In the first round Niluka defeated a player ranked 8th in the world and today lost to a player ranked 21st in the world.
However many badminton veterans believe that Niluka Karunaratna lost a game that he could have won.
Former national Badminton Coach Srimal Aponso stated that the instructions given to the Indian player by his coach played a major role in the Indian player’s victory.
He further stated that instead of Niluka’s coach the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Badminton Federation had occupied the seat of the Sri Lankan coach.
