The first phase of the TESO Summit or the Eelam Cooperation Summit got underway in the Akkodi Conference Hall in Chennai under the aegis of DMK Patriarch M. Karunanidhi today.
According to the Office of the Deputy Sri Lankan High Commissioner in India
the initial venue of the summit had been shifted from Rayapetel hall in Chennai to the Akkodi conference hall due to a petition which had been filed before court by the head of Chennai police.
Accordingly court conferred police with power to decide on the venue for the summit and subsequently the Akkodi conference hall was chosen over the initial venue, where police personnel ruled it out due to space constraints and several other concerns.
Meanwhile expressing his views during the TESO conference DMK Patriarch and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has asserted that his party will actively intervene in protecting the rights of Sri Lankan Tamils.
However according to the office of the Deputy Sri Lankan High Commission in Chennai, Two delegates from Sri Lanka are also in attendance at the TESO conference which is currently underway, although their identities remain undisclosed.
In related developments the Patriotic National Movement staged a protest before the official Quarters of the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka this morning expressing the movement's stiff dissent against the TESO summit which is currently underway in Chennai.
An effigy of DMK Patriarch M. Karunanidhi was also set ablaze by enraged protesters while Chairman of the PNM Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to issue a statement that the 13th amendment would not be enacted.
