Our correspondents state that the wild fire which erupted in the Yahangala area located on the Eastern escarpment of the Knuckles conservation has gradually spread to the Madakele village.
The fire has spread to a crop cultivated area and a grass land located near by.
The fire which erupted last evening has not been contained while around 50 acres of land have been consumed in the fire.
At present the air force is said to be aiding in attempts to dowse the fire.
Strong winds present over the area have made it impossible for fire fighters to contain the fire.
Meanwhile yet another forest fire has erupted in a forest reserve located in the Badulla-Lunugala-Sooriyagoda area.
The fire is said to have consumed around 12 acres of land while efforts are underway to contain the fire.
In this backdrop the Disaster Management Centre said that around 1000 acres of land have been destroyed in forest fires which erupted over the past 8 months.
Deputy Media Director of the CDM speaking to our news team added that around 70 acres of land had been destroyed during fires which erupted yesterday.
