The ministry of higher education has decided to close all universities except the faculties of medicine indefinitely.

However the Healthcare sciences faculty of the Eastern University will remain open.

However, despite the faculties being closed all the non academic staff and the lecturers have been ordered to report to work by the ministry.

Minister of Higher Education, S. B. Dissanayaka, in releasing a statement has stated that these university crises have been created based on political needs and hidden conspiracies.

The minister further stated that although approximately 10 rounds of discussions were held in order to solve the issues of the university lecturers, the Federation of University Teachers Association is not taking a positive step towards a resolution.

The FUTA engaged in a strike based on 6 demands which was the starting point of the university issue which has lasted close to 2 months.

According to the ministry of education the government had fundamentally agreed to 5 of these demands and had not agreed to the demand made by FUTA requesting a raise in the basic salary by 20%.

Speaking to our news team Deputy Minister of higher education Nandimitra Ekanayaka made the following statement.

However, University lecturers vehemently condemn this move.
