The ministry of health has decided to spray the Cuban BTI bacteria by air within Colombo city limits to combat dengue.
The ministry stated that this decision was made during a special discussion regarding Dengue held yesterday under the patronage of Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena.
The Epidemiology unit had observed that there was a tendency of dengue spreading rapidly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Kandy district and the Akurana region in the past 2 months.
The epidemiology unit also states that over 25,000 dengue patients were reported and 83 dengue related deaths were reported during this year.
During yesterday's meeting, the Minister had instructed the epidemiology unit to take steps to spray the Cuban BTI bacteria from the air.
The ministry stated that the pilot project will target areas that are hard to reach in the city of Colombo in the coming week.
A special discussion has been scheduled today between the health ministry officials and the Cuban ambassador with regards to importing the BTI bacteria to Sri Lanka and also a discussion is scheduled to be held today with the Air Force with regards to spraying the bacteria.
