President Mahinda Rajapaksa has advised the Finance Ministry to cancel the loans the drought-afflicted farming community had obtained from Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank and Cooperative Banks along with the relevant interest.
Meanwhile the President said the Government had already allocated funds for free grant of next season's seed paddy and fertiliser to farmers.
Touring the Unagalaa-vehera village 48 in Hingurakkoda the President met the 'Bedum Ela' farming community engaged in cultivating crops under the Giritaley Scheme.
On this occasion the President said that a plan had been drawn jointly with the World Food Organisation for granting relief to farmers.
It is a specialty that the President visited a paddy field and saw with his own eyes the paddy fields destroyed by the drought.
In addition the President has instructed the pawning banks to take steps to collect the interest for the pawned gold jewellery after the farmers obtain the Maha Season harvest.
