The election battle for the provincial council elections scheduled to be held on the 8th of this month has become intense and the battle for the Eastern Province is at the forefront.
Speaking at an election campaign meeting in Trincomalee yesterday, the leader of the SLMC, Minister Rauff Hakeem stated that a 3 way tussle has developed for the Eastern provincial council and that this has occurred due to the decision of the SLMC to contest independently in the Eastern Province.
However Minister Dulles Alahapperuma stated that the SLMC is using racism to further its cause in the Eastern Provincial Council race.
The minister made this statement while speaking at the UPFA media briefing on the 29th of August.
He further requested that all parties enter the election battle without resorting to racism.
The leader of the SLMC, Minister Rauf Hakeem stated that these allegations are being levelled at the party in face of the challenge presented by the SLMC.
The minister responded to Minister Dulles Alahapperuma's statement in the following manner.
Meanwhile, the National Freedom Front states that death threats have been issued against its Eastern Provincial Candidate Jayantha Wijeysekara.
