All eyes were set on the Eastern Provincial Council during yesterdays polls since the SLMC which is a constituent party of the ruling coalition had arrived at a daring decision to contest the province independently.
However the ITAK or the Illangei Thamil Arusu Katchchi which obtained a higher number of votes in the districts of Batticaloa & Trincomalee was able to secure victory over the SLMC.
Moreover the Kalkuda electorate which is located in the Batticaloa district was won over by the UPFA.
Although the SLMC was able to secure victory in the Potthuvil, Kalmune & Samanthurei electorates, it was the UPFA which was adjudicated the final victor of the district owing to the multitude of votes the party was able to garner in the Ampara electorate.
However when analyzing the total result of the Eastern provincial council, the SLMC will remain a crucial ally for the victory of the UPFA or ITAK to establish power over the province.
14 members have been elected for the Eastern provincial council from the UPFA while one members has been elected from the NFF.
Meanwhile 11 members have been elected for the Eastern provincial council from the ITAK while 4 members have been elected from the United National Party.
Against this backdrop 7 members were elected for the Eastern provincial council representing the SLMC.
Accordingly, Deputy General Secretary of the SLMC Nissam Kariyappar noted that the party's supreme council hopes to arrive at a final decision regarding its allegiance in the East.
