Several countries have expressed their dissent against the appointment of a

Human  Rights Commissioner for the Commonwealth.

Canada, Australia & Britain however had voted in favour of the proposal.

It is reported that a group of Sri Lankan politicians comprising of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, UNP Parliamentarians Dr. Jayalath Jayawardhana, John Amarathunga & TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumandiran had voted in favour of the suggestion.

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkodi expressed the following views regarding the proposal during a media briefing which was held this evening.

Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris meanwhile commenting on the proposal noted that only discussions could be held during a commonwealth summit.

He added that a decision affecting a country could not be drawn during such a meeting.
