Sri Lanka's Male suicide rate surges

The Department of Police states that 1778 persons have committed suicide over the first half of the year.

A majority who had committed suicide are said to be males with the number standing at 1,381.

According to the police media unit a total of 3,770 persons had committed suicide during last year while 3,864 persons had committed suicide in 2010.

A majority of these suicides within these 3 years were reported from the areas of Rathnapura & Anuradhapura while the age group most prone to suicides has been ascertained as 40 to 55.
