A highly radioactive consignment of goods stored within a container was discovered on board a vessel which had arrived from India today.
According to the Ministry of Power & Energy around 125 units of stainless steel & aluminium utensils had been stored within the container.
Radiation tests carried out by the Atomic Energy Agency had revealed traces of Cobolt 60, which is a highly radioactive element used in the treatment of cancer.
Anil Ranjith, head of the AEA's Radiation Protection Division expressed the following views to our news team in this regard.
Speaking further he noted that steps were afoot to re-ship the container.
