The Annual Animal sacrifice ceremony which was due to be held at the controversial Chilaw Munneshwaram Sri Badrakali Kovil has been called off this year.
A spokesperson for the kovil, Mariyapillai Kanakarathnam Mahendran speaking to our news team noted that since period of the sacrificial ceremony had elapsed the decision had been reached.
A group comprising of the JHU & Minister Mervyn Silva were in protest against the annual sacrifice of the kovil which is held during August annually.
Subsequent to the arrival of the Sacred Kapilawasthu Relics the president requested of the custodians of the kovil to abstain from conducting the ceremony.
Moreover the Chilaw police had even filed a petition at the Chilaw District Court seeking a restraining order, which was declined by Chilaw District Judge Jagath Kahandagama stating that the district court was unable to sustain the petition.
However when inquired by Mariyapillai Kanakarathnam Mahendran, a priest at the kovil if the ceremony would take place next year, he had this to say.
