Opposition is being expressed by the Bar Association of the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court, against a proposal which has been raised by the Colombo Bar Association.
Accordingly the Colombo Bar Association has requested that individuals who are non affiliates of the Attorney Generals Department and are engaging in private law practice be permitted to be appointed as magistrates.
However during an emergency session of the Colombo Chief Magistrates Court Bar Association General Assembly today, this proposal was defeated and another was endorsed in its stead.
The Executive Committee of the Colombo Bar Association recently decided that attorneys engaging in private practice should be permitted to be appointed as magistrates to the Supreme Court, Appeals Court & High Court.
This request at present has also been directed to the Sri Lanka Bar Association.
