Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe states that a battle should be waged to gain more votes instead of preferential votes.

Wickremesinghe's comments came during a meeting held at party head quarters Sirikotha today with the participation of newly elected provincial councillors who were elected during the recently held polls.

Meanwhile, the petition filed by UNP Southern Provincial Councillor Attorney at law Maithree Gunarathna against the extension of the party's leadership tenure was withdrawn today.

The petition was filed at the Mount Lavinia District Court citing that a decision

to extend the party's leadership tenure by its working committee was contrary to the parties constitution.

An attorney representing Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had in court today had established that the decision was not in contravention to the parties constitution.

Hence the petition was withdrawn by UNP Southern Provincial Councillor Attorney at law Maithree Gunarathna.
