Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijerathna today ordered that the Convenor of the Inter University Students Federation Sanjeewa Bandara be placed under remand custody until the 25th of this month.
It is reported that Sanjeewa Bandara has been charged with vandalising public property & assaulting police officers during a protest which was held on the 29th last month.
The suspect was arrested while travelling in a bus yesterday subsequent to his engagement in a protest which was convened by the IUSF.
The arrest had been made by a group of officer's attached to the Colombo Crimes division who had been clad in civil attire.
Moreover police obtained a court order against the IUSF and the Bikku Balamandala yesterday proscribing them from inconveniencing the public during their protest.
Meanwhile the Colombo Fort Magistrates court today issued notice to the Son of Minister Mervyn Silva-Malaka Silva, his accomplice Rohan Wijerathna & the major who was allegedly assaulted by the individuals in dispute to be present before court tomorrow.
Notice was issued to the individuals when the case was taken up before courts today.
Accordingly the prisons Commissioner was ordered to produce the suspects before the courts tomorrow along side the army major who is currently receiving treatment at the Military Hospital.
Attorneys representing both the complainant & the defendant parties filed 2 motions before court today subsequent to which the court order was issued.
Moreover during a media briefing headed by Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana in Colombo today, a journalist inquired into the recent altercation which had broken out between Malaka Silva
& an army major.
