Government sources say that University Teachers will be provided a salary increment with effect from the 1st of October.

Accordingly the basic salary of a Senior Professor will be increased from 57 thousand 755 Rupees to 67 thousand 100 Rupees.

Sources say that accordingly their net salary will be increased from 119 thousand to 140 thousand Rupees.

The Ministry of Higher Education says that this would be the fourth salary increment for University Teachers within one and half years.

Meanwhile, the National Movement for Education Reforms says that the trade union action by the FUTA was taking the lives of students lightly.

Convenor of the Movement Sumudu Wijewardana expressed these views at a media briefing that was held yesterday.

Today is the 4th day of the walk organized by the Federation of University Teachers Associations and it would proceed from Kalutara to Moratuwa.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the battle is not with University Teachers but with their intellect.

The Opposition Leader expressed these views joining the walk organized by the Federation of University Teachers Associations at Payagala North yesterday.

He also stated that funds allocated for the education sector was insufficient.
