The Royal Norwegian embassy of Colombo issuing a press communiqué has categorically denied allegations that more than 60 Tamil children who were born in Norway had been forcibly taken by Norwegian child welfare authorities from their parents of Tamil origin.

The communiqué released soon after a protest held opposite the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo by the Lankan relatives of the parents of these children, said that separating a child from their parents was not a decision taken in an arbitrary manner devoid of proper investigations.

The communiqué also noted that the welfare, safety and the rights of the child were among matters taken very seriously in Norway and that raising children was the primary responsibility of parents but sometimes child welfare service intervened if domestic measures at homes were insufficient to meet the needs of children.
