Indian media reports state that steps are underway to recall 33 Indian nationals who are being imprisoned at detention centres in Sri Lanka.

According to the Deputy Minister of Indian External Affairs this initiative is being engaged under the Indo-Sri Lanka prisoner exchange programme which was ratified in the year 2010.

Information regarding the Indian detainees had come to light following a  revelation which had been made by an Indian journalist who had arrived in the island to cover the 20/20 Cricket World Cup.

Upon his arrival in the island, the journalist who is believed to have been covering the 20/20 world cup for the Malayalam news paper in Kerala, 'Malayalam Daily' had submitted a report to the Indian central government.

According to the report submitted, a majority of Indians detained at jails in

Sri Lanka constitute of Indian fisherman.
