The Local Authorities Special Provisions Bill and the Local Authorities Election Amendment Bill were passed in parliament today.

 The new bills will completely abolish the preferential system and introduce a mixed system.

With that the electorate method will take 70%, ratio method will take 30% to select representatives.

Minister Dinesh Gunawardhna was contacted by our news team today in a bid to obtain information regarding the passing of the Local Authorities Election Amendment Bill and the Local Authorities Special Provisions Bill which was passed in parliament today annulling the preferential voting system for local government bodies.

Incidentally Minister Gunawardhana heads the parliamentary select committee which has been appointed to formulate a new voting system.

Moreover Minister Dinesh Gunawardhana also made the following clarifications on the new election system which will incorporate both the equal representation & divisional mechanisms.

Under the new amendment parties which are defeated remain eligible to gain a representation.
