The police states that investigations have been launched into the incident where a group of fishermen who set sail from the Matara - Kudawella fishing port were attacked at sea by another group via several avenues.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Prishantha Jayakody stated that a special team has been deployed to conduct these investigations.
The attacked vessel departed from the Matara - Kudawella fishing port two days ago but was later attacked by a group of individuals in another vessel about 1 nautical mile off the coast.
5 individuals in the boat that was attacked were subsequently thrown over board while their hands and feet were bound.
Two fishermen were able to survive this ordeal while the whereabouts of the other 3 are still unknown.
The 2 fishermen were then discovered by two merchant vessels that rescued them and informed the Navy and then brought them to the Galle port.
The two injured fishermen, issuing a statement to the police had stated that 6 individuals including themselves had come under attack approximately 30 minutes after leaving port in a state of the art fishing vessel and that the helmsman of the fishing vessel itself had joined in the assault.
Speaking to our news team Navy Media Spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya stated that the merchant vessel "Jaya Sagara" had brought the two fishermen to the Gall Harbour and they were subsequently hospitalized.
The two surviving fishermen had further stated to the police that 3 others who were thrown overboard with them had disappeared.
