Measures by the Water Resource Board to charter a new piece of legislation to impose taxes on ground water has come under heavy discussion at present.

Accordingly, to achieve this the Water Recourse Board plans on either introducing a new bill in place of the Water Resources Board Act of 1964, or an amendment to it.

Chairman of the Water Recourse board Bandula Munasinghe expressed the following views to our news team in this regard when contacted yesterday.

When inquired by Minister of Irrigation & Water Resources Dinesh Gunawardhana it was noted that his line ministry would not sanction such a move.

Speaking further Minister Gunawardhana added that if such proposals are being forwarded by other ministries they should be thoroughly scrutinized prior to submission.
