A profusion of fresh & salt water fish are being reported adjacent to the outfall of the Beruwala Silliya Canal.
When our correspondent had arrived at the site of the phenomenon a large number of dead fish had been witnessed.
According to his account, fisherman had been witnessed harvesting fish from the outfall of the Canal.
When inquired from the Head of the Environmental Unit of the National Aquatic Resources Agency S.A.M. Asmi it was noted that a special team had been dispatched to the site of the incident.
Meanwhile a similar phenomenon was witnessed adjacent to the Eastern shores of the Kalmune coastal belt.
Professor Ruchira Kumaratunga of the Marine Biology Department of the Ruhuna University however cautioned the public to refrain from consuming
these fish due to contaminated algae.
