A group of residents engaged in a protest blocking the unprotected railway crossing near the Habaraduwa fertilizer storage facility following the death of two individuals who were run over by a train travelling from Matara to Colombo Fort stating that such accidents occur because the railway crossing is unprotected.

The victims who were travelling on a motorcycle at the time of the accident were a 22 year old youth from Wellawaya and a 20 year old youth from Udugama.

The Department of Railways stated that railway transportation was somewhat hindered as a result of the protest.

Several residents of Habaraduwa expressed their views in the following manner.

Operations director of the Railway Department Vijaya Samarasingha states that there are 950 unprotected railway crossings in the country.
