There is a lot of political discussion regarding the abolishing of the 13th amendment following the claim by certain parties that the Divi Neguma Bill cannot be approved without the endorsement of the Northern Provincial Council.
An emergency proposal stating that the 13th amendment is required for the longevity of the country was presented by the UNP to the western provincial council today which was defeated by the government with a majority vote.
During the UNP media briefing held in Colombo UNP General Secretary MP Thissa Aththanayaka also expressed his views regarding this.
He stated that if an opportunistic decision is taken to abolish the 13th amendment it would cause many problems.
General Secretary of the communist party Senior Minister Dew Gunasekara also stated that abolishing the 13th amendment would be inviting terrorism.
He further stated that there is another agenda behind this political ideology.
