Trade Unions of the Sapugaskanda Refinery are warning that there is a possibility that the refinery process can come to a halt tonight or tomorrow.
Speaking to our news team the general secretary of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya branch of the CPC Ananda Palitha stated that the refining process should not stop like this.
The delay in importing crude oil for the refinery is the reason for this situation.
Due to the sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States of America the supply of Iranian Light Crude Oil has stopped.
The crude oil most suitable to the Sapugaskanda refinery is Iranian Light Crude Oil and as at present the type of crude oil being used is Arabian Light Crude Oil.
Our news team inquired from the Sri Lanka Independent Workers Union branch of the CPC regarding the statement made by the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya branch of the CPC.
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Independent Workers Union branch of the CPC Bandula Saman Kumara stated that there in enough crude oil in the refinery for two days of operation.
Speaking to our news team the manager of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery Neil Jayasekara stated that the refinery has enough crude oil to continue the refining process for 3 days.
