United Peoples Freedom Alliance Anuradhapura Central-Nuwaragama Divisional councillor Sarath Weerasinghe was placed under arrest by police today.

According to the Police Media Unit the arrest had been executed by the Police Archaeological Unit.

Charges have been levelled against Sarath Weerasinghe quoting that he had filled a pond utilizing earth which had been located on a site of archaeological significance and had constructed a shop over it.

The Department of Archaeology had notified Weerasinghe to eliminate the construction.

Since the councillor had chosen to ignore the warning, facts were presented to the Anuradhapura Magistrates Court in this regard, which had ordered his arrest upon failure to be present before court.
