The opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the Divi Neguma bill will be presented to the President and the Speaker today or tomorrow.
The petitions presented to the Supreme Court regarding the draft bill were examined on the 23rd of October.
The Supreme Court first stated that in order to approve the Divi Neguma bill the government would have to obtain endorsements from all provincial councils.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, all provincial councils except the Northern Provincial Council endorsed the bill.
Due to the Northern Provincial Council not being established the government stated that the approval of the Governor of the Northern Provincial council would suffice.
14 petitions filed against the proposed Divi Neguma Bill were taken up before the Supreme Court on the 22nd of October comprising a three judge panel headed by Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayeke.
Our news team spoke to a senior parliamentary spokesperson regarding the matter and he stated that the opinion of the Supreme Court should be personally presented to the Speaker within 14 days.
He further stated that the parliament is scheduled to convene on the 6th of next month and that the speaker would inform the house of the Supreme Court Opinion on that day.
