Five writ petitions, including giving direction to the authorities to provide licenses to the fishermen in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu to carry firearms with them, were dismissed by the Madurai bench of the Madras high court.
The petitioners had sought the issuance of licenses immediately to fishermen to carry firearms with them while fishing in the sea between India and Sri Lanka.
One petition had also requested of court to consider naming Katchatheevu as a natural territory and historic water of India.
Meanwhile External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and his Indian counterpart Salman Khursheed held talks in New Delhi today.
It is reported that discussions had focussed on the fisherman issue.
