The Centre for Disaster management states that 67 families in the Karuwalagas wewa - Kuda wewa - yaya eka village have been displaced do to 18 sluice gates of the Thabbowa tank being opened this morning as a result of heavy rains experienced.
The Centre for Disaster Management further stated that these families have been moved to a welfare camp and have been provided with the necessary welfare facilities.
Deputy Director of the disaster Management centre Pradeep Kodipillai speaking to our news elaborated further.
Meanwhile, due to the heavy rains experienced in the North Central, Eastern and North Western provinces during the last 24 hours, several tanks & reservoirs in those regions have reached spill levels while several others have come close to reaching their spill levels.
The deputy director of the water management section of the Department of Irrigation, Janaki Meegasthanna stated that the Rajangana tank in Anuradhapura is also close to its spill level.
In addition, she further stated that the Bathalagoda tank in the Kurunegala district and the Maha-diwulwewa in the Tricomalee district have already reached spill levels.
The water levels of the Kotmale, Bowathenna, Kalawewa and Ulhitiya reservoirs in the catchment areas have exceeded 50 percent with Kotmale filled to 88 percent of its capacity.
