The courts today dismissed the petition filed by 5 members of the UNP requesting a stay order to be issued to the party preventing the suspension of their party membership.

Our court correspondent stated that this petition was denied by the District Judge Pradeep Abeyratne when the petitions were taken up at the Mount Lavinia district court today.

This petition was filed by MPs Palitha Rangebandara, Palitha Thevarapperuma, Ashok Abeysinghe, and provincial councillors Shiral Lakthilaka and Maithree Gunaratne who took part in the political rally held at Hyde Park on the 18th of last month.

An order was issued by the UNP working committee to all its members to refrain from taking part in this meeting.

Following their participation in this meeting, these 5 members' party membership was suspended by the party working committee and subsequently a petition was filed at the Mount Lavinia district court.

Yet the Mount Lavinia district court stated that as only one party is present in court a stay order cannot be issued.

Therefore the court issued an interim injunction order and ordered both parties to be present at courts on the 15th of December
