The opposition is getting ready to request the Speaker to increase the number of persons allocated for the opposition to be members in the PSC appointed for considering the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice.
Chief Opposition Whip MP John Amaratunga said that the opposition hoped to request the Speaker today to increase to six the number of members appointed for the PSC from the opposition.
While currently the total number of members in this PSC is 11, seven members will represent the ruling party.
While the opposition can nominate four members, out of these the UNP could appoint two members.
There is the opportunity to appoint one each from the DNA and the TNA.
Chief Opposition Whip MP John Amaratunga elaborating on this stated as follows.
The Government has nominated its members who will represent the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to investigate the impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike.
Accordingly Anura Yapa, Nimal Siripala, Susil Premajayantha, Rajitha Senarathna, Wimal Weerawansa, Dilan Perera & Neomal Perera will represent the government during the PSC.
According to informed sources, members of the UNP are said to consist of UNP MP's John Amarathunga & Lakshman Kiriella.
The two remnant seats left vacant on the PSC would be handed over to the Democratic National Alliance & the Tamil National Alliance.
However these parties remain indecisive regarding their participation in the PSC.
Meanwhile Neelakandan and Neelakandan Lawyers' firm has released a letter to the media on behalf of the Chief Justice.
It is said in the letter that their client the chief justice refutes the charges levelled against her.
