A tense situation arose in the Welikada prison this afternoon following a special search operation by the police special task force and the prison intelligence unit based on instructions issued by the minister of prisons and reforms.
The security forces have temporarily shut down Baseline Road from the Borella Junction to Dematagoda owing to the tense situation not abating.
According to our news correspondent several prison officials have been wounded as a result of the situation.
The situation had arisen following a search in the L and Chappell wards when the inmates had protested against the search.
According to our news correspondent on scene the security forces fired tear gas to control the situation and currently several inmates have climbed on the roof of the prison and are continuing their protest.
The ministry of prisons and reforms stated that mobile phones, drugs and other contraband was seized during the search operation.
Director of the Emergency Ward of the Colombo National Hospital Dr Prasad Ariyawansha says that 13 persons including security officials and detainees have been hospitalized and are being treated at present.
A hospital spokesperson stated that several others who were injured are now being brought to hospital.
