The tense situation which arose within the Welikada prison complex yesterday has been completely brought under control at present.

According to Minister of Rehabilitation & Prison Reforms Chndrasiri Gajadheera

operations are currently under way to nab detainees who had escaped the prison complex with weapons.

Engaging in a conversation with our news team Minister Gajadheera expressed these views to our news team regarding yesterday's tense situation which had erupted at the Welikada prison complex.

Meanwhile the Bodies of 16 individuals who were killed during yesterday's confrontation at the Welikada prison complex are currently lying at the morgue of the Colombo National Hospital.

According to the Director of the Colombo National Hospital, Dr. Anil Jasinghe 43 individuals who had sustained injuries during yesterday's unrest are also receiving treatment at the National Hospital.

Among them are said to be 13 Special Task Force officers, 23 prison inmates, & 4 soldiers.

Meanwhile 4 persons including the Commanding Officer of the STF, D.I.G. R.W.M.C.Ranawana who had sustained injuries during yesterday's altercation at the Welikada prison complex, are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.

The 14th Battalion of the army meanwhile assisted authorities in brining the tense situation which erupted at the Welikada prison complex yesterday under control.

According to Military Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya an internal investigation regarding the incident is currently underway.

Meanwhile police notes that a special investigation has been launched into yesterday's unrest at Welikada.

Furthermore according to Police Media Spokesperson SSP Prishantha Jayakodi the Baseline route which was closed for vehicular traffic yesterday, has been re-opened.

A special search operation was conducted jointly by STF personnel & prison guards at the Welikada prison complex yesterday.

When detainees had displayed resistance to the search operation, authorities had attempted to bring the situation under control by utilizing tear gas.

However this attempt was foiled and an ensuing tense situation had erupted.
