Police states that information has come to light that 11 out of the 27 inmates who were killed in yesterdays clash at the Welikada Prison Complex were those imprisoned for having committed grave crimes.
According to Senior DIG of the Western Province Anura Senanayeke it has also been revealed that these 11 inmates had orchestrated yesterdays clash.
A group of criminals including 3 detainees who had been commuted the death sentence had been killed in yesterdays clash at the Welikada Prison Complex.
Meanwhile Minister of Rehabilitation & Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadheera made a special statement in parliament today regarding the clash at the Welikada prison complex which erupted yesterday.
Speaking here Minister Gajadheera noted that investigations into the incident were underway at both ministerial & departmental level.
The total number of deceased during yesterdays clash at the Welikada prison complex stands at 27 while 43 individuals had sustained injuries.
Commanding officer of the Police Special Task Force R.W.M.C. Ranawana is also among those injured.
Director of the Colombo National Hospital, Dr. Anil Jasinghe expressed the following views to our news team concerning the condition of those injured
& presently are receiving treatment at the hospital following yesterday incident.
Meanwhile Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe expressing his views regarding yesterdays incident at the Welikada Prison Premises urged the government to launch an independent investigation into the death of inmates & seized weapons.
According to Wickremesinghe it was recommended that the investigations be led by senior ministerial officials & police personnel.
