The Indian High Commission said that the 33 Indian convicts and the five remand prisoners in Welikada prison were safe.
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Ashok K Kantha, told The Hindu that the High Commission has been constantly monitoring the situation since the time the clashes broke out and that the Sri Lankan authorities have told them that the Indian prisoners are safe.
The Indian High Commission has also sought consular access to the prisoners.
The High Commissioner added that their main concern is the welfare of Indian prisoners.
Meanwhile, Police stated that the post mortem examination on the 27 inmates who were killed in the clash will be held today.
The magistrate inquiry in to the incident was concluded yesterday.
The Colombo National Hospital stated that 27 persons continue to receive treatment at the hospital.
