Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, under pressure to stay away from the bench owing to an impeachment motion brought against her, has stated that she would be withdrawing from all Ceylinco-related cases.
Making a statement in open court today, the Chief Justice said she was withdrawing from hearing the Ceylinco cases and that a different bench would be constituted to hear these cases in future.
The fundamental rights cases involve Golden Key, Finance & Guarantee and Ceylinco Shriram.
The new bench will comprise of Justices Nimal Gamini Amarathunge,
K. Sripavan and Sathya Hettige.
Lawyers for the two GK Depositors’ Associations quoted the chief justice as saying that she had presided over the bench hearing the Golden Key case on a petition filed by a depositor and requests of relevant parties.
Meanwhile a party leaders meeting was convened at the parliamentary complex today in order to discuss the impeachment motion filed against the countries Chief Justice.
A parliamentary Select Committee comprising of 11 members has been appointed to investigate the impeachment motion filed against the Chief Justice.
The composition of the committee includes 7 members from the government and 4 from the opposition.
According to Chief Opposition Whip John Amarathunga, the composition of the PSC had been directed to the attention of the Speaker of the house.
The opposition had called on the speaker to grant an equal representation for both parties in the PSC or one additional representation for the government.
However both suggestions had been declined.
Accordingly Chief Opposition Whip John Amarathunga expressing his views to our news team added that the names of himself, Lakshman Kiriella, Vijitha Herath & R. Sambanthan had been handed over to the speaker as opposition members due to be represented in the PSC.
Meanwhile Ministers Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Nimal Siripala, Susil Premajayantha, Rajitha Senarathna, Wimal Weerawansa, Dilan Perera & Deputy Minister Neomal Perera represents the government in the PSC appointed to investigate the impeachment motion.
