The welfare association for prison officers state that two prison officers of the Welikada prison have been suspended for releasing statements to the media during the riot that took place at the Welikada prison recently.
A senior spokesperson of the association stated that a discussion has been scheduled tomorrow with the commissioner of prisons P. D. Kodippili regarding the suspensions.
He further stated that in the event that a favourable response is not received preparations have been made to engage in a trade union action.
Meanwhile, Prison Commissioner G. B. Kulatunga stated that 5 inmates who escaped during the riot are still missing.
He further stated that these inmates include 4 prisoners and 1 suspect.
In addition the commissioner also stated that 4 firearms belonging to the prison are also still unaccounted for.
15 individuals who were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for injuries are still being treated at the hospital.
These include 11 inmates, 3 officers of the Police Special Task Force and 1 soldier.
A spokesperson for the hospital stated that the condition of the Commanding Officer of the Police STF DIG R. W. M. C.Ranawana, who is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit, is improving.
However, the Human Rights Commission has also decided to launch an investigation into the incident that took place inside the Welikada Prison.
