Hospital sources state that due to the strike initiated by two nurses associations activities at hospitals islandwide have been affected to a certain extent.
Upon inquiry by our news team a spokesperson for the National Hospital in Colombo stated that certain treatment services for patients have been slightly affected.
The spokesperson further stated that hospital activities are continuing with the assistance of attendants and other hospital staff.
A spokesperson of the Kandy General Hospital also stated that hospital activities have not been greatly affected and that hospital activities are continuing with the assistance of the nurses who are not taking part in the strike and other hospital staff.
It is reported that despite the activities of the hospitals of Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Galle and Karapitiya being slightly affected, activities are continuing with the intervention of hospital authorities.
Meanwhile, the nurses associations that are taking part in the strike state that the strike is continuing successfully.
Chairman of the Government Nursing Officers Association Saman Rathnapriya stated that due to the strike hospital activities have been severely affected.
Chairman of the All Island Nurses Association S. B. Mediwatta stated that the strike being conducted under the patronage of his association is successfully continuing in all hospitals.
However, the nurses representing the Government Services United Nurses Association are not taking part in this strike.
Chairman of the association Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero stated that the demands of the unions engaging the strike are unfair.
