During parliamentary proceedings today, the impeachment motion brought against the Chief Justice was a topic of discussion.
Members of parliament brought two articles published in a government newspaper and a private newspaper to the attention of the Speaker.
Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena raised a question of privilege after quoting a statement issued to a private newspaper by Democratic National Alliance MP Anura Dissanayaka.
The speaker, who questioned MP Anura Dissanayaka, expressed his view in the following manner.
Quoting an article published in a government newspaper, chief opposition whip John Amaratunga stated that the editor of the newspaper should be brought before the parliamentary privileges committee.
However, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena stated that since a select committee has been appointed with full authority with regards to the impeachment, that committee can act on this.
