The Ministry of Health states that it has identified the bacteria present in the red showers experienced in the areas of Sevanagala, Manampitiya, Hingurakgoda & Padiyathalawa as the Trachelomonas bacteria, a strain of algae which has not yet been discovered in Sri Lanka.

According to the Ministry of Health the Trachelomonas bacteria is a single celled micro organism which is harmless to human health & is able to switch its colour from green to red depending on its environment.

Director of the Medical Research Organisation Anil Samaranaike said that genetic tests are currently underway to determine the propagation speed of this bacteria.

Meanwhile Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, Senior Lecturer in Physics at the University of Colombo & Consultant -Astronomy and Space Applications at the Arthur C. Clarke Centre rules out any extra terrestrial connection to the red showers which were experienced in several parts of the island recently.
