Incidents were reported from several parts of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces throughout last week where students had contracted certain allergies.
The first incident was reported from the Gampola Jinaraja College where around 1000 students were admitted to hospital with different ailments.
Thereafter 40 students of Pannilathenna Maha Vidyalaya in Gampola, 87 students of Weligepola Sri Somadevi Vidyalaya in Balangoda and 200 students of the Nugawela Boys school in Kandy also suffered allergic reactions.
We inquired from Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe – the Health Services Director of the Central Province regarding the investigations being carried out in to the incident.
She stated that blood samples of some students who contracted allergies have been sent to the Medical Research Institute.
However, Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake speaking to our news team stated that schools in the Central Province that were closed due to students contracting allergic reactions will be reopened tomorrow.
