The two printing machines believed to have been used in the printing of the first Sinhala newspapers, Lankalokaya and Lakmini Pahana and the first Sinhala magazine, Yathalaba, have been destroyed by fire.

These two printing machines were stored at the Ranwella Temple in Ahangama - Kathaluwa - Giniwella.

Our regional news correspondent stated that the fire that ravaged the temple had severely damaged the printing machines.

These two machines which were shipped to Sri Lanka from Myanmar in 1860 were given to two printing presses situated in Dangedara, Galle and inside the Galle Fort where the Lankalokaya, Lakmini Pahana and Yathalaba were printed.

Subsequently these machines were placed in the care of the clergy and were placed at the Ranwella Temple in Kathaluwa - Giniwella.

The 150 year old living quarters of the temple was also destroyed in the fire along with a vast number of ancient Ola leaf books.
